Pratt and Daniel Stuart (1878), and George Richard Hill and Richard Ballantyne (1879), were indeed missionaries assigned to eastern TN. You can find mention of their assignments in John Hamilton Morgan's papers. Elders Pratt and Stuart headed for E TN in Dec 1878 and in March 1879 (same page) they reported having covered 400 miles through that area. Elders Hill and Ballantyne were in the area in Dec 1879 and reported baptizing ten persons.

I am descended (g-g-grandson) from the George Washington Perkins mentioned in the baptism records. His family was in Perkins Hollow, Shell Creek, Carter County, TN (barely east of the town of Roan Mountain, TN), but they emigrated to the Mormon pioneer settlement of Manassa, CO in 1880-1882, living in Block 39, shortly after becoming Mormons. They lived in Manassa in the 1880s and early 1890s. He ultimately ended up in Broken Bow, OK. I knew about the missions of Pratt, Stuart, Hill and Ballantyne to TN, but we didn't have G. W. Perkins' baptism date (other than 1880, from Manassa LDS records), so this blog entry is a welcome find. You might mention where you found the missionary diaries listing this baptism - that would be much appreciated.

Matt Perkins (in CA)
FindAGrave member M_D_Perkins
mdperkyolp---at---hotmail---dot---com
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
